My untitled and unfinished novel about UC Berkeley
and San Francisco's North Beach in the 1950s.

Paul Benning's classically trained mind is being dragged into the 20th century. He had once intended to be a Methodist preacher but in college he had drifted through High Anglicanism into agnosticism.

Paul experiences the rising tide of cultural revolt in America as an encroachment on his way of life. He lives in two worlds: the University of California's Berkeley campus, where he feels at home but vaguely discontented, and the San Fransisco Beat scene, which repels but fascinates him.

Much of what I wrote overlaps this remarkable document, in which I briefly appear and from which I produced a Powerpoint video.
